"Afternoon at the Cottage"

I made this little painting not so long ago as an idyllic vision of the countryside. It's mostly imaginary and it expresses my longing for a peaceful and simple life that is so hard to find in this crazy, spinning world we have now.

"Afternoon at the Cottage", 17x23 cm, oil on board

When I was a little girl I used to spend summer at my granny's house, where everything had its own history and mistery around it.
Wide open windows welcomed gentle and warm wind carrying rich scents of nettles and mint growing in the shadows of the old plum trees in the garden.
Oh, how I loved sitting by the window, when the sun would fill the rooms with the honey of its afternoon light.

This is the feeling I wanted to recreate in this painting and because it doesn't depict any existing interior, it seems more like a dream place.

  1. Love the cat sitting in the patch of sunshine and the description of your granny's house, although I am not sure nettles have a scent.

    1. I'm really glad you like it, Elaine :) As for the nettles, they do have SOME scent, but of course they are not considered to be aromatic plants.

  2. Oh Marielle - what a lovely painting...your thoughtful post brought back memories of visiting and spending the summers at my Grandparent's home. Grandma always had lilacs and sweet peas and whenever I catch the scent of them I too am transported back to a sweeter time. My grandma always loved cats too and it was so nice you included that in your imaginary setting. Have a wonderful week-end.
